Choosing Materials for Objects:
When creating objects, the choice of material is crucial. The selection of a material depends on its properties and the intended use of the object. For example:
A tumbler must be made of a material that can hold liquids, such as glass, plastic or metal.
A sweater should be made of a soft, warm material like wool or acrylic.

The students were asked to consider various materials that could be used to make a tumbler. They were encouraged to think about why certain materials were better suited for this purpose. The materials that are required to make a tumbler should be capable of holding water.

Why cannot a tumbler made of cloth be used for storing water?
Answer:
A cloth tumbler can’t store water because cloth absorbs liquids, lacks structural integrity to hold water and allows leakage. It’s also challenging to clean and maintain hygiene. In contrast, materials like plastic, glass or metal are used for their non-absorbent, durable and leak-proof properties.

Based on shape:

Let’s discuss the various properties of materials that affect their usage in daily life.

Appearance :
Materials often vary in appearance. For example:
- Lustrous materials like metals (iron, copper and aluminium) have a shiny surface: This property is known as lustre.
- Non-lustrous materials like wood, rubber and paper do not shine.
Observing Luster
The teacher brought various objects to the class and asked the students to observe which ones were shiny (lustrous) and which ones were dull (non-lustrous).

Transparency
Materials can also be categorised based on their transparency:
- Transparent: Objects can be clearly seen through these materials (e.g., glass).
- Translucent: Objects can be seen but not clearly (e.g, frosted glass).
- Opaque: Objects cannot be seen through these materials (e.g., wood).
In the game of hide and seek, Ghulan, Sheeta and Sara chose their hiding spots based on how visible they were through different materials:
1. Ghulan hides behind a wall, which is opaque. This means no light passes through it, so Ghulan is completely hidden from view.
2. Sheeta hides behind a big tree. The tree is opaque as well, making it impossible for others to see through it, thus providing good cover.
3. Sara hides behind a frosted glass door, which is translucent. While she is not completely visible, the frosted glass allows some light to pass through, making it hard to see her clearly.
4. Sheeta’s younger brother hides behind a glass window and can be seen through the it because glass is transparent, meaning it allows clear visibility.

1. Do liquids like oil, vinegar and honey dissolve in water? Explore.
Oil: Oil does not dissolve in water. This is because oil is non-polar and water is polar. Polar substances dissolve in polar solvents, and non-polar substances dissolve in non-polar solvents. The lack of attraction between the polar water molecules and non-polar oil molecules prevents the oil from mixing with water. Instead, oil tends to form a separate layer on top of the water due to its lower density.
Vinegar: Vinegar, which is primarily acetic acid in water, does dissolve in water. Vinegar is polar and its molecules can interact with water molecules through hydrogen bonding. This allows vinegar to mix completely with water, forming a homogeneous solution.
Honey: Honey dissolves in water to some extent. Honey is a complex mixture of sugars (mainly fructose and glucose) and other compounds, and it is somewhat polar. The sugars in honey can interact with water molecules through hydrogen bonding, allowing honey to dissolve and mix with water, though it may take some time and stirring.

- Oxygen (O2) : Moderately soluble; essential for aquatic life.
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2): More soluble; forms carbonic acid, affecting pH.
