SECTION A
(Reading – 20 Marks)
Question 1.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: (8)
1. Hectic working schedules have seen many of us grab a quick sandwich before heading off to the next meeting. Some of us fly out of the house after a hasty cup of tea or a banana and get so involved with work that only when we get home do we realize that we have not eaten all day! Exam time stress or pressure during an assignment often means that students miss out on ‘regular’ meals and ‘make do’ with a couple of patties. This way they can study while they eat!
2. But wait! Surely that cucumber in your sandwich or that slice of tomato on your toast or even the banana you ate for breakfast does not comprise your vegetable and fruit intake for the day? In fact, even if you were to give yourself a lunch comprising a “healthy” bowl of salad twice a week or a platter of fruit for breakfast once a week – you may simply not be getting enough of the right kind of nutrition.
3. Scientific evidence suggests that many of our health problems can stem from poor dietary habits that lead to various nutritional deficiencies. We need to eat a healthy mix of fruits and vegetables every day. Since the body cannot store every vitamin it needs, some of the vitamins we consumed from that bowl of salad or the platter of fruit yesterday may have already been flushed out of four systems today.
4. Few understand that the lack of a balanced diet can lead to deficiencies, which if not addressed can cause ailments later. So, why do we not believe in the axiom, “Prevention is better than cure” and begin eating nutrient-rich, balanced meals right away?
1.1. On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer any eight of the following questions in brief: (1 x 8 = 8)
(a) What are the different intakes when we are in a hurry?
(b) What do we realize at the end of the day?
(c) How do students cope with exams?
(d) What led to various nutritional deficiencies?
(e) Even if we take a lunch comprising a healthy bowl of salad – we are not getting enough nutrition. Why?
(f) Mention the idiom given in the passage.
(g) What scientific evidence suggests?
(h) What should be done after realizing about these deficiencies?
(i) Find the word in paragraph 4 which means ‘diseases’.
Question 2.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: (12)
1. No season is more challenging for the skin than summer, when ultraviolet rays lead to fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, acne, and dark spots. Women in hormonal transition, especially pre and post-pregnancy, and during menopause, are particularly vulnerable to these problems. However, when nature attacks, it also offers some excellent defenses. Try these…
2. Coconut water: It is nature’s pure packaged drink. Coconut water is naturally sterile and packed with hydrating electrolytes such as potassium, sodium, natural simple sugars, enzymes, and vitamins.
Drink it: One glass daily is essential.
Use it: To coconut water add some turmeric powder, a teaspoon of Chandan and a few drops of tea tree essential oil. This makes for a cooling and hydrating face pack.
3. Aloe Vera and Cucumber: Aloe vera juice, if consumed daily, reduces acidity and gas, and hydrates the colon from the inside. Cucumber and kakdi are rich in cooling minerals.
Drink it: Mix aloe vera juice with mint and mausambi juice. Vitamin C in the juice is good for collagen and the enzymes are great for skin regeneration.
Use it: Make a face pack with aloe vera gel and grated cucumber, apply and leave on for 45 minutes.
4. Tomato and beetroot: Tomato is a rich source of Lycopene, an essential ingredient that helps repair damaged skin. Even skin bums heal better when fresh raw tomatoes are added to the diet.
Drink it: Make a juice of beetroot, tomatoes, and mint. Season with salt and pepper.
Use it: Exfoliate your skin with a mix of raw sugar and papaya. Wash your face. Apply a tomato paste mixed with few drops of beetroot juice and leave on for 30 minutes.
5. Celery and mint: Celery is an excellent natural diuretic – great for hormonal fluctuations and water retention. The latter often results in puffy face, can damage delicate skin fiber, and lead to early sagging and collagen damage.
Drink it: Add a few mint leaves to celery juice. Drink without salt at least three times a week.

Corruption in Public Life
Corruption has become one of the biggest problems in our country. On the other hand, it is an accepted fact that we are having ultimate progress in various fields, but the graph of corrupt practices has surpassed all. Indians are rated as well as ranked on the seventh number for corruption, bride and accepting illegal gratifications to favor others. From top to bottom not only the public servants but also the private enterprises are entrapped into it. Both legal and illegal work cannot be undertaken without bribe or some illegal favor. In newspapers, we daily read criticism on the part of Government servants on 2G spectrum. Many societies are raising their voices but nothing comes out positive. Laws are openly violated to benefit others. A keen longing of selfishness has spread everywhere in all the offices.
In the present scenario, we are very near to the verge of some revolution and the same will be very fatal for all.

All of a sudden a violent storm brewed outside. There was both thundering and lightning. In no time the lights went out. There was complete darkness all over and nothing was visible. I jumped in fright and screamed. Tears were about to come. I searched for candles or torch but nothing was found as the inverter was also out of order. I went on gathering courage and peace internally. But whenever I touched anything, it looked eerie and fearsome. I was waiting for some miracle. Suddenly everything changed in a flash and I saw morning light. I was happy to see the light. I opened the door as the storm has subsided completely. My hawker was standing at the door with the morning newspaper. I was happy to see him and heaved a sigh of relieve.

Through her experienc,e Buddha wanted to teach that death is inevitable and common to all human beings. It is reality of life which one must accept. It is essential and ultimate destination to all human-being. Though the death of a loved one can be painful, all the grief, suffering and lamentations are futile as these cannot bring the dead back to life. Anne’s relationship with her mother was of a normal teenager loved and spoiled by her. Her mother took interest in her friends. In her April 2 (1943) entry she confessed that she had hurt her mother terribly by refusing to say her prayers with her. She was a rebellious teenager, obstinate and with a mind of her own. Her mother got up, stood beside her bed for a moment and then slowly walked towards the door. Anne tried to analyse her feelings in the diary entry and the ‘hatred’ of her mother. She realised that it was her worries and nervousness which made her mother irritable and she snapped at her. She also realised that she took her remarks seriously. Suddenly she (her mother) turned her face contorted with pain and told her that love could not be forced and she could not make Anne love her. There were tears in her eyes as she left the room though Anne felt sorry for her. She knew that her cold behaviour towards her mother was all due to the cruel jokes and her tactless remarks. Her mother cried half the night and did not get any sleep. Anne remained indifferent towards her mother’s tears.

Helen got a chance to visit the place where poor people lived. She had a very bad experience, bad in the sense that she felt very disappointed and sad after looking their pathetic condition. She, actually observed all this. She felt hot and indignant to think how good people were content to live in furnished, fine houses and become strong and beautiful while the poor were condemned to live in hideous and sunless homes. She felt those children were depressing and underfed. The memory of these children haunted, crouching in her heart with a constant sense of pain. The men and women were all bent, rough and twisted with age and out of shape. She had felt their hard, rough hands and realised what an endless struggle their existence must be – no more than a series of confused thwarted attempts to do something. She felt that there was a vast disparity between opportunity and effort for them. They were also deprived of God’s free gift of the Sun and the air because the air was foul and the sun did not reach the dingy alleys. She wondered if a man would leave the splendour of the cities and return to the woods and fields for an honest living. It is only then the children of the poor would grow strong, healthy and their thoughts would be pure and sweet.
