Classify the objects or materials given below as opaque, transparent or translucent and luminous or non-Iuminous:

Question 3.
Can you think of creating a shape that would give a circular shadow if held in one way and a rectangular shadow if held in another way?
Answer:
Yes, there are many things which give a circular shadow if held in one way and a rectangular shadow if held in another way. For example, a cylinder, a circular disc, etc.

Question 4.
In a completely dark room, if you hold up a mirror in front of you, will you see a right-left inverted image of yourself in the mirror?
Answer:
No. In a completely dark room, no image will be formed because the image seen in a mirror is formed due to the reflection of light from the object and since there will be no light in a completely dark room, no image will be formed.

Activity 1

Make a friend stand in the Sun and measure the length of the shadow she casts on the ground. Measure such a shadow at different times of the day. Some friend, standing in the same place. Then, try and answer all these questions.

Question 1.
How was the shadow of your friend made?
Answer:
The shape of my friend is the same as her shape.

Question 2.
What is the length of the shadow?
Answer:
The length of the shadow changes from time to time. It is shortest in the noon and longest in the morning.

Question 3.
How does this compare with the height of your friend?
Answer:
The shadow can be smaller or longer than the height of a friend.

Question 4.
What factors affects the height and position of the shadow?
Answer:
The position of the sun above us affects the height and position of the shadow.

Question 5.
Does the shadow give an accurate picture of the shape of your friend’s body? If your friend turns around a little and then you look at the shadow, how does the shape of the shadow change?
Answer:
The shape of the shadow does not change.

Question 6.
Try and hold different objects and look at the shapes of their shadows. Do the shapes of the shadows always tell you what exactly is the original opaque body that is casting the shadow?
Answer:
No.

Question 7.
Take a thin notebook and look at its shadow. Then, take a shoebox and look at its shadow. Do the two shadows seem to have a similar shape?
Answer:
Yes.

Activity 2

Question 1.
Light a candle. Place one end of the tube in front of the flame. Look at the flame through the tube. Can you see the flame?

Yes, the flame of a candle is seen.

Question 2.
Bend the tube in the middle as shown in Figure (a) and look at the lighted candle again. Can you see the flame this time as well?

No.

Question 3.
Why could we not see the flame in Q.No (ii)?
Answer:
Light travels in a straight line, therefore, the flame of a candle is not seen from a bent tube.
