Imagine you are Ernest. Narrate the story that his mother told him. Begin like this: My mother and I were sitting at the door of our cottage. We were looking at the Great Stone Face. I asked her if she had ever seen any one who looked like the Stone Face. Then she told me this story.

A child in future should be born. He was destined to become the wisest, greatest and noblest person of his time. In manhood, his face would resemble to the Great Stone Face. The inhabitants of our valley still had faith in the prophecy. A few learned men in the valley ignored it as an idle talk. But majority of the people were waiting for that greatest, noblest and wisest person to come.

किसी निश्चित दूरी से देखने पर पहाड़ियाँ तथा विशाल पत्थर मानो विभिन्न आकृतियाँ धारण करते हुए लगते हैं। वे किसी जानवर अथवा इंसान की आकृति के समान दिखते हैं। लोग इन आकृतियों के साथ कहानियाँ जोड़ देते हैं। कुछ कहानियाँ सच हो जाती हैं और कुछ नहीं होतीं। ‘द ग्रेट स्टोन फेस’ एक ऐसी ही आकृति है जो घाटी के नागरिकों को एक भविष्यवाणी की याद कराती है। वह क्या थी? और क्या वह सत्य साबित हुई?

एक दिन दोपहर के बाद जब सूर्य अस्त होने जा रहा था, एक माँ और उसका लड़का अपनी झोंपड़ी के दरवाजे पर बैठे, विशाल पाषाण चेहरे की चर्चा कर रहे थे। उन्हें आँख उठाते ही वह चेहरा साफ दिखाई दे जाता था यद्यपि वह मीलों दूर था, सूर्य के प्रकाश में उस चेहरे के सभी अंग चमक उठते थे।

परंतु वह विशाल पाषाण चेहरा था क्या? विशाल पापाण चेहरा प्रकृति की संरचना था, जो बड़ी-बड़ी चट्टानों के द्वारा पर्वत के एक ओर बना था। पत्थर कुछ इस प्रकार से बिखरे हुए थे कि एक निश्चित दूरी से देखने पर वे किसी मानवी चेहरे के अंग जैसे दिखते थे। यदि दर्शक बहुत निकट पहुँच जाता था तो विशाल चेहरे की रूपरेखा उसकी दृष्टि से ओझल हो जाती थी तथा वह एक के ऊपर एक रखे ऊबड़-खाबड़ पत्थरों का ढेर ही देख पाता था। पर दूर से देखने पर पाषाणी चेहरा निश्चित रूप से मानवीय तथा सजीव दिखाई देता था। बहुत से लोगों की यह मानना थी कि घाटी का उपजाऊपन उस शुभ चेहरे के कारण था जो लगातार उन पर नजर रखे हुए था। एक माँ तथा उसका छोटा लड़का, जैसाकि पहले भी हमने बताया था; अपनी झोंपड़ी के दरवाजे पर बैठे पाषाणी चेहरे को निहार रहे थे और उसके बारे में बतिया रहे थे। बच्चे का नाम अर्नेस्ट था।

“माँ,” उसने कहा, जब विशालकाय चेहरा उसे देखकर मुस्करा दिया, “काश कि वह बोल पाता। उसका चेहरा इतना दयालु जान पड़ता है कि उसका स्वर भी वास्तव में खुशनुमा होगा। यदि मैंने कभी इस चेहरे वाले व्यक्ति को देखा तो मैं उससे बहुत प्यार करूँगा।”“यदि एक पुरानी भविष्यवाणी सत्य साबित हो जाती है,” उसकी माँ ने उत्तर दिया, “हम किसी दिन ऐसे व्यक्ति को देख सकेंगे जिसका चेहरा बिल्कुल इस चेहरे के समान होगा।” । ___ “आप किस भविष्यवाणी के बारे में बात कर रही हैं?” अर्नेस्ट ने व्यग्रतापूर्वक पूछा । “कृपया मुझे उसके बारे में बताओ।”

अतः उसकी माँ ने उसे वह कहानी सुनाई जो उसकी अपनी माँ ने उसे तब सुनाई थी जब वह अर्नेस्ट से भी कम आयु की थी; कि, भविष्य में कभी आसपास एक बच्चा जन्म लेगा जो अपने समय में महानतम तथा विनमतम व्यक्ति वन जायेगा, और जिसका चेहरा युवावस्था में विशाल पाषाण चेहरे से मिलता जुलता होगा। बहुत से लोग अभी भी इस भविष्यवाणी में विश्वास रखे थे। परंतु शेष व्यक्ति इसे एक बकवाद के सिवाय कुछ न मानते थे। इस प्रकार की मुख-आकृति वाला कोई भी व्यक्ति अभी तक मिला न था।“ओ, माँ,” अर्नेस्ट अपने सिर से ऊपर करके अपने हाथ बजाता हुआ चिल्लाया, “मुझे आशा है कि मैं उस चेहरे को देखने के लिए जीवित रहूँगा।”उसकी माँ स्नेहपूर्ण तथा विचारवान औरत थी। उसने सोचा कि यह उचित होगा कि वह अपने छोटे लड़के की कल्पनाओं का हौंसला न तोड़े। इसीलिए उसने उसे कहा, “हो सकता है कि तुम देख सको।” .

और अर्नेस्ट अपनी माँ की बताई गई कहानी कभी नहीं भुला सका। जब कभी भी वह उस विशाल चेहरे को देखता तो कहानी सदा उसकी याद में बनी रहती। उसने अपना बचपन घाटी में ही व्यतीत किया तथा अपने छोटे हाथों से प्यार-सिक्त हृदय से माँ की सहायता करता रहा। इस प्रकार, बच्चा बड़ा होकर एक विन्रम तथा खामोश युवा बन गया।
अर्नेस्ट का कोई गुरू नहीं था, परन्तु वह विशाल पाषाण चेहरा उसका एक गुरू बन गया। जब दिनभर का काम समाप्त होता, वह उसे घण्टों तक निहारता रहता जबतक कि वह यह कल्पना प्रारंभ नहीं कर देता कि वे विशाल अंग-प्रत्यंग उसे पहचानते हैं और उसकी ओर दया और प्रोत्साहन भरी मुस्कान दे रहे हैं।

उन्हीं दिनों घाटी में एक अफवाह फैली कि एक महान व्यक्ति घाटी में आ पहुंचा था जिसके चेहरे की साम्यता पाषाणी चेहरे से है। ऐसा लगता है कि, बहुत वर्षों पूर्व, एक युवक घाटी को छोड़कर दूर स्थित बन्दरगाह में बस गया था। उसका नाम था गैदर-गोल्ड, अपनी दुकान बना ली थी, व्यवसाय में तीक्षण बुद्धि होने के कारण, वह एक बहुत धनी व्यापारी बन गया। बहुत समय बीत जाने पर उसे अपने जन्मस्थली घाटी की याद आई तथा उसने वहाँ लौटने का निर्णय ले लिया, ताकि जहाँ उसका जन्म हुआ था, वहीं उसके प्राण भी निकलें।

अर्नेस्ट को लोंगों की इस बात पर कोई सन्देह नहीं हुआ कि अब उसे विशाल पाषाणी चेहरे से समानता रखने वाला जीवित व्यक्ति देखने को मिल जायेगा। जब बालक एक दिन घाटी पर दृष्टि दौड़ा रहा था तथा कल्पना कर रहा था कि पाषाणी चेहरा भी उसकी ओर देख रहा था, उसे गाड़ी के पहियों की खड़खड़ सुनाई दी, और लोगों की भीड़ चिल्ला रही थी, “महान मि. गैदर-गोल्ड आ पहुंचे हैं।” सड़क के मोड़ पर एक गाड़ी आ पहुँची जो चार घोड़ों से खींची जा रही थी। उसमें से खिड़की से बाहर एक वृद्ध व्यक्ति का चेहरा, जिसकी त्वचा पीली थी, झुका हुआ दिखाई दिया। “विशाल पाषाणी चेहरे का प्रतिरूप यही है।” लोग चीखे। “बिल्कुल वैसा ही, पुरानी भविष्यवाणी सच हुई। अंततः हमने उस महान व्यक्ति को पा लिया है।” और, अर्नेस्ट को हैरानी हो रही थी, लोगों को विश्वास हो गया था कि इसी व्यक्ति का चेहरा पाषाणी चेहरे के समान दिखता है। वह उदास भाव से मुड़कर चल दिया; और उसने घाटी में दूर तक दृष्टि डाली, जहाँ मानो पाषाणी चेहरा कह रहा थाः वह अवश्य आयेगा! घबराओ नहीं, अर्नेस्ट; व्यक्ति अवश्य आयेगा।

वर्ष बीतते गये, और अर्नेस्ट युवा व्यक्ति बन गया। उसने घाटी के निवासियों के माध्यम से कुछ ध्यान आकर्षित किया। उन्होंने उसके जीवन के तौर-तरीके में कुछ भी अनुकरणीय नहीं दिखाई दिया, सिवाय इसके कि, जब दिनभर का काम खत्म हो जाता था, वह फिर भी पापाणी चेहरे की ओर देखना अच्छा लगता था। उनका विचार था कि यह मूर्खता थी, परन्तु क्षम्य थी, क्योंकि अर्नेस्ट उद्यमी था, दयालु व मान्य था। वे यह नहीं जानते थे कि विशाल पाषाणी चेहरा उसके लिए गुरू तो बन चुका था, और भावना थी कि युवा व्यक्ति के हृदय को बढ़ा कर देगा; और उसे अन्य दिलों के लिए सहानुभूति भर देगा। वे यह नहीं जानते थे कि इससे पुस्तकों से अधिक बुद्धिमता प्राप्त होगी। न तो अर्नेस्ट जानता था कि जो विचार उसमें जागे प्राकृतिक रूप से, खेतों में तथा आग के किनारे, वे उनसे अधिक ऊंची लय के थे जो उसे अन्य लोगों ने बताया। एक साधारण आत्मा, जैसा वह साधारण था; जब उसकी माँ ने उसे पुरानी भविष्यवाणी सनाई थी। उसने वह शानदार चेहरा देखा जो घाटी की ओर नीचे देख रहा था और चकित हो रहा था, कि इसकी मानवीय समानता ने क्यों आने में अधिक समय लगा दिया है।

ऐसा हुआ कि घाटी का एक अन्य बेटा कई वर्षों पूर्व सैनिक बन गया था। युद्ध के पश्चात् वह अब एक प्रसिद्ध कमाण्डर बन गया था। युद्ध स्थल में लोग उसे ‘रक्त और गर्जन’ के नाम से जानते थे। अब वृद्ध तथा थका होने के कारण उसने अपनी जन्मस्थली घाटी में लौटने की इच्छा बनाई। घाटीवासियों ने उस वीर सैनिक का स्वागत करने का निश्चय कर लिया, विशेष रूप से इस कारण कि लोगों ने कहना शुरू कर दिया था कि उसके तथा पाषाणी चेहरे में बहुत समानता है। उसके बचपन के साथी यह कहने को तैयार थे कि जनरल सदा से ही पाषाणी चेहरे जैसा दिखता रहा। और इस कारण सम्पूर्ण घाटी में उत्साह और खुशी का माहौल था, तथा जिन लोगों ने कभी पाषाणी चेहरे को देखने का विचार नहीं किया था, वे अब काफी समय उसे देखने में बिताने लगे, ताकि यह अनुमान लगा लें कि ‘रक्त और गर्जन’ जनरल कैसा दिखता होगा।
