A bargain is an agreement in which both parties promise to do something for each other. The poem deals with the apt bargain done by the poet from the most of the bargains he refused to done them. Finally when the poet is hired for nothing whatever, he is happy as never before.

एक सौदा एक ऐसा समझौता है जिसमें दोनों पक्ष एक-दूसरे हेतु कुछ करने का वायदा करते हैं। कोई किसी काम को ढूँढ़ रहा है, किराये पर जाने की प्रतीक्षा कर रहा है। वह एक सौदा तय करता है, परंतु उसे बेकार समझता है। वह दो बार पुनः कोशिश करता है, परंतु दोनों में से कुछ भी उसे पसंद नहीं आता। अंततः अंतिम सौदे में, जब उसे किसी किराये पर लिया जाता है, किसी मेहनताने के बिना, वह इतना प्रसन्न होता है जितना पहले कभी नहीं हुआ। वह सौदा क्या है और वह सबसे बढ़िया क्यों है ?

“आओ और मुझे किराये पर लो,” मैं चिल्लाया, जब मैं प्रातः उस पथरीली सड़क पर चहलकदमी कर रहा था। राजा अपने हाथ में तलवार लिए रथ पर सवार होकर आया। उसने मेरा हाथ पकड़ा और बोला, “मैं तुम्हें अपनी शक्ति से प्राप्त करूँगा।” परंतु उसकी शक्ति का कोई मोल नहीं था, और वह वापिस अपने रथ में लौट गया। दोपहर की गर्मी में, घरों के दरवाजे बंद थे। मैं विकृत गली में इधर-उधर घूमा। एक बूढ़ा व्यक्ति अपने हाथ में सोने के थैले साथ वाहर आया। उसने सोचा और कहा, “मैं तुम्हें अपने धन से किराये पर लूँगा।” उसने एक-एक करके सिक्कों को तोला, परंतु मैं वापिस मुड़ चला था।

शाम का समय था। बगीचे की झाड़ियाँ फूलों से लदी थीं। एक सुंदर कन्या बाहर आई और बोली- “मैं तुम्हें अपनी मुस्कान से किराये पर लूंगी।” उसकी मुस्कान पीली पड़ गई और आंसुओं में बदल गई, और वह अकेली अंधेरे में वापिस चली गई। सूर्य रेत पर तेज चमका, और समुद्र की लहरें आवारगी में उमड़ पड़ीं। एक बच्चा बैठा सीपियों से खेल रहा था। उसने अपना सिर उठाया और मुझे जानता था, ऐसे प्रतीत हुआ और वोला, “मैं तुम्हें किराये पर निःशुल्क खरीदता हूँ।” और बच्चे के खेल में तय सौदा से आगे निकल कर मैं एक स्वतंत्र इंसान बन गया।
