NCERT Solutions for Class 7 Science Chapter 2 Nutrition in Animals
Question 1.
Fill in the blanks :
- The main steps of nutrition in humans are …………., …………., …………., …………., and ………….
- The largest gland in the human body is …………..
- The stomach releases hydrochloric acid and …………. juices which act on the food.
- The inner wall of the small intestine has many finger-like outgrowths called …………..
- Amoeba digests its food in the …………..
Solution:
- ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation, and egestion.
- liver
- digestive
- villi
- food vacuole.
Question 2.
Mark ‘T’ if the statement is True and ‘F’ if it is False:
- Digestion of starch starts in the stomach. (T/F)
- The tongue helps in mixing food with saliva. (T/F)
- The gall bladder temporarily stores bile. (T/F)
- The ruminants bring back swallowed grass into their mouth and chew it for some time. (T/F)
Solution:
- F
- T
- T
- T
Question 3.
Tick (✔) mark the Correct answer in each of the following :
(a) Fat is completely digested in the
- stomach
- mouth
- small intestine
- large intestine
(b) Water from the undigested food is absorbed mainly in the
- stomach
- food pipe
- small intestine
- large intestine
Solution:
(a)-3 small intestine
(b)-4 large intestine
Question 4.
Match the items of Column I with those given in Column II:
Solution:
Column I | Column II |
Food components | Product(s) of digestion |
Carbohydrates | Fatty acids and glycerol |
Proteins | Sugar |
Fats | Amino acids |
Column I | Column II |
Carbohydrates | Sugar |
Proteins | Amino acids |
Fats | Fatty acids and glycerol |
Question 5.
What are villi? What are their location and function?
Solution:
The inner walls of the small intestine have thousands of finger-like outgrowths, these are called villi.
Location of Villi: The Villi are found in the inner wall of the small intestine.
The function of Villi: The villi increase the surface area of the intestine for absorption of the digested food.
Question 6.
Where is the bile produced? Which component of the food does it help to digest?
Solution:
Bile is produced by the liver and is stored in the gall bladder. Bile juice digests fat.
Question 7.
Name the type of carbohydrate that can be digested by ruminants but not by humans. Give the reason also.
Solution:
Cellulose is a carbohydrate that can be digested by ruminants. Ruminants have a large sac-like structure between the small intestine and large intestine. The cellulose of the food is digested by the action of cellulose digesting enzymes, i.e., cellulose and certain bacteria which are not present in humans.
Question 8.
Why do we get instant energy from glucose?
Solution:
Glucose is the simplest form of carbohydrate which can be broken down easily to give energy. So, glucose is called an instant energizer.
Question 9.
Which part of the digestive canal is involved in :
- absorption of food …………..
- chewing of food …………..
- the killing of bacteria …………..
- complete digestion of food …………..
- formation of faeces …………..
Solution:
- small intestine
- buccal cavity
- stomach
- small intestine
- large intestine
Question 10.
Write one similarity and one difference between the nutrition in amoeba and human beings.
Solution:
Similarity:
Amoeba: During the digestion of food, amoeba secretes digestive juices into the food vacuole. They act on the food and break it down into simpler substances.
Human beings: In the case of human beings, the inner walls of the stomach and the small intestine also secrete the digestive juices. The digestive juices convert complex substances of food to simpler ones.
Difference:
Amoeba: Amoeba feeds some microscopic organisms. When it senses food, it pushes out pseudopodia around the food particle, surrounds it completely, and then the food is trapped as a food vacuole.
Human beings: We take food through the mouth, digest and utilize it. The food component gradually gets digested as food travels through the various compartments.
Question 11.
Match the items of Column I with suitable items in Column II:
Column I
(a) Salivary gland
(b) Stomach
(c) Liver
(d) Rectum
(e) Small intestine
(f) Large intestine
Column II
(i) Bile juice secretion
(ii) Storage of undigested food
(iii) Saliva secretion
(iv) Acid release
(v) Digestion is completed
(vi) Absorption of water
(vii) Release of faeces
Solution:
(a)-(iii)
(b)-(iv)
(c)-(i)
(d)-(ii)-(vii)
(e)-(v)
(f)-(vi)
Question 12.
The label of the digestive system (as given in the NCERT Textbook Exercise)
Solution:
Question 13.
Can we survive only on raw, leafy vegetables/grass? Discuss.
Solution:
We know that the heterotrophs do not possess the ability to synthesize their own food. Therefore, they depend upon autotrophs for their food supply either directly or indirectly. We also know that the green plants (leafy vegetables/grass) trap solar energy and manufacture their food in the form of glucose. So we say that leafy vegetables and grass can provide sufficient energy for human beings to survive.
