SECTION A
(Reading – 20 Marks)
Question 1.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: (8)
1. If you’ve noticed that you’re feeling exhausted, that every time you climb a flight of steps you feel winded or that your skin does not look or feel right, your hair is falling and your nails are constantly breaking, don’t take these symptoms lightly. It’s possible that you are iron deficient.
2. Most of us do not realize that iron is an important component of hemoglobin, a protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen from our lungs to the rest of our body. So, if you don’t have enough iron in your system, you could well be feeling fatigued and out of breath.
3. Iron deficiency leads to anemia, particularly common among women who are at the reproductive ages, as well as children and adolescents of both sexes who require iron to grow, expand blood volume, increase hemoglobin concentration and muscle mass.
4. Given the lifestyles we lead and our rather inadequate dietary intakes of the right kinds of food, anemia is a problem that cuts across the rural and urban divide. The health consequences of anemia in children and adolescents are well known – it affects physical growth and mental development, reduces energy levels and impairs the function of the immune system. Both boys and girls need iron for growth during adolescence, but girls have a continuous need to replace the iron lost during menstruation.
5. Figures from the National Family Health Survey (2005-6) showed that 30.2 percent, 19.3 percent and 23.1 percent of men in the age groups of 9-15, 20-29 and 30-39 respectively, were anemic. The figures for anemia in women in the same age brackets were even greater – 55.8 percent, 56.1 percent and 54.2 percent respectively.
6. So, if you’ve attributed your feelings of exhaustion, falling hair and other factors to a hectic lifestyle, think again. Increase your intake of iron-rich fruits and veggies as you may well be iron deficient!
1.1. On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer any eight of the following questions in brief: (1 x 8 = 8)
(a) Write any two symptoms of a person deficient in iron.
(b) Name the disease that is caused due to iron deficiency.
(c) What are the health consequences of anemia?
(d) Why do girls need more iron during adolescence?
(e) What is hemoglobin?
(f) What did the figures from NFHS (2005-06) show?
(g) What were the figures for anemic women in the age group of 20-29?
(h) What can be done for the iron deficient person?
(i) Find a word from the passage which means ‘chaotic’.
Question 2.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: (12)
1. When people become members of an organization on equal terms and use their resources towards achieving common goals, it is called a co-operative. Suppose a person with a cow has surplus milk, he or she might want to sell it and make some money. In villages, the local trader or the middleman would buy this surplus milk at a price which suited him. Then he would add water and sell it at a higher price. Thus, the seller made no profit, the end buyer got diluted milk, but the trader minted money.
2. This is where co-operative steps in. The milk sellers form a co-operative. They organize for the milk to be collected at village levels and transported to a plant where it can be pasteurized. Then this milk is packed in pouches and transported to distributors at various towns and cities. Here good quality milk is sold to the end buyer.
3. Co-operative has a reputation for selling unadulterated goods and do not emphasize maximizing profit. Because every seller of milk is an equal member of the co-operative, they run a transparent organization and work towards its growth. This avoids traders and money lenders, increases ownership and accountability, ensures the better voice of dairy farmers in management, gets them timely payments and provides access to useful technical guidance and information.
4. The reason for the stupendous success of milk co-operatives in India can be summed up in one word – empowerment. The sheer hard work of ordinary and marginalized dairy farmers, their unstinting co-operation with one another, an indomitable will to achieve a common goal, together with the visions of people like V. Kurien, the father of Indian dairy farming, milk co-operatives have scripted success stories like Amul, Verka and Operation Flood. When the co-operatives dairy movement was started, the daily per capita milk consumption was 106 ml. Today, it is 250 ml or 90 kg per year. Today milk is the country’s number one agricultural commodity. Thus both milk producers, mostly marginal, small and landless farmers and consumers, who get value for their money and healthy milk, are mutually benefited.
2.1. On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer any four of the following questions in brief: (2 x 4 = 8)

Changing Lifestyle and Health
The lifestyle of a person is very important in a person’s life as it reflects his health. People work for long hours these days, sitting on their seats most of the time. They leave early and come late, tired and exhausted. They neither have time nor strength to do any exercise. They simply lie down and watch T.V. It is indeed shocking that a good percentage of people in our country, eat fast food rich in calories that lead to disease like obesity, heart disease, diabetes etc. Even school going children are developing these diseases because they also love fast food and spend hours in watching TV and munching snacks. To remain healthy, change of lifestyle is a must. Everybody should spare time for some walk, exercise or yoga. Adults, as well as children, should spread awareness that junk food should be avoided.

Helen was taught German by Miss Reamy who was a famous German teacher. She had a unique and interesting way of teaching. She made Helen very comfortable with her. She could use the manual alphabet while teaching her. Soon Helen learned some small vocabulary. Helen and her teacher started talking together in German, whenever they get the chance. She became comfortable with the language in a few months. Helen could understand almost everything she said. Helen studied so well that before the end of the first year she read ‘Wilhelm Tell’ with the greatest delight. Helen studied French with Madame Oliver. She was a French lady. Madam Oliver was a good teacher but she did not know the manual alphabet. She used to give her instruction orally. Helen had to catch up the words from her lips. But Helen could not read her lips easily. There was always a gap between her German teacher and a French teacher. So her progress in learning French was much slower than in German. She was more comfortable in German than French.
OR
Bishop Brooks was one of the ‘many men of genius’ Keller knew. His two great ideas the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man impressed her. As a child, Helen would sit on his knee and Miss Sullivan would spell “God in her hand”. Bishop Brooks gave Helen a real sense of joy in life and Helen always learned a fine thought, in every meeting she had with him. He taught Helen that there was only one universal religion—the religion of love. He imported a very fine message to Helen that if one loves the heavenly father with a whole heart and love each child of God, then there lies the key to heaven. She found no creed or system more soul-satisfying than Bishop Brook’s creed of love. Helen knew him from childhood and listened to him with grave intent when he talked her spiritual domains and broadened her thoughts on the religious horizons. Her proximity with the Bishop enabled her to embrace the entire humanity as her family. Helen always remembered to be kind and loving to all his creation and this was indeed ‘soul-comforting’ philosophy of religion. For Helen, it was the religion that brought peace in the heart and inspired humanity to undertake the wondrous task. If one believed in this then all the dark clouds withered away. Helen could not forget Bishop Brooks’ teaching and remain grateful for such gems of thought.
