Question 1.
Think of a few renewable resources and mention how their stock may get affected by overuse.
Answer:
Renewable resources: Wildlife, Forests, Water.
1. Wildlife is a renewable resource. But due to their indiscriminate hunting, some species have become extinct and few are on the verge of extinction This may give rise to various other problems, like the food chain may get disturbed.

2. Forests are another renewable resource. It takes few minutes to cut a tree with a machine but years to grow a tree. Indiscriminate cutting of forests will not only affect their stock but also give rise to various other problems, such as soil erosion, etc.

Question 1.
Make a list of five human-made resources that you can observe around you.
Answer:
Five human-made resources:

  1. Buildings
  2. Road
  3. Vehicles (bus, train, etc.)
  4. Electrical goods (television, refrigerator)
  5. Clothes
  6. Utensils.

Question 1.
Answer the following questions :

(i) Why are resources distributed unequally over the earth?
Answer:
The distribution of resources depends on various factors such as the physical nature of the place. The physical factors include terrain, climate, height above sea level, etc. Since these factors vary in different parts of the world, resources are pot distributed over the earth.

(ii) What is resource conservation?
Answer:
Using resources carefully and giving them time to get renewed is called resource conservation.

(iii) Why are human resources important?
Answer:
Human resources are important because they have an intelligent mind which can make the best use of nature to create more resources. Had humans not been there, different substances would not have been resources. Their utility can only be realized by human beings.

(iv)What is sustainable-development?
Answer:
Balancing the need to use resources and also conserve them for the future is called sustainable development.

“Rahiman paani raakhiye,
Bin paani sab soon.
Paani gaye na ubere
Moti, manus, choon ”
[Says Rahim, keep water, as without water there is nothing. Without water pearl, swan, and the dough cannot exist.]
These lines were written by the poet ” Abdur Rahim Khankhana, one of the nine gems of Akbar’s court. What kind of resource is the poet referring to? Write in 100 words what would happen if this resource disappeared?
Answer:
The poet is referring to the renewable resource, water. If the water will disappear then

  • The hydrological cycle (water cycle) will stop.
  • Drought conditions start prevailing over the earth.
  • Forests will also disappear.
  • Rainfall does not occur thus crops cannot be grown.
  • Due to lack of water plants and animals will die.
  • Human beings will become extinct.
  • The atmosphere will also get affected.
  • The marine life will get totally finished.
  • The ecological balance will get disturbed.

In conclusion, life cannot exist on the earth without water. Our planet will become lifeless.

For Fun

Question 1.
Pretend that you live in prehistoric times on a high windy plateau. What are the uses you and your friends could put the fast winds to? Can you call the wind a resource?
Now imagine that you are living in the same place in the year 2138. Can you put the winds to any use? How? Can you explain why the wind is an important resource now?
Answer:
In prehistoric times: When the fast winds start blowing we would try to hide in caves or behind rocks to protect ourselves. In this case, winds cannot be called a resource because we are scared of fast winds and they are of no use to us.

In the year 2138: Energy (in the form of electricity) is generated using windmills. For this purpose, wind farms have been established. In this case, the wind is an important resource because it has utility and economic value. With the help of technology, it is used to satisfy a need. Energy generated in windmills is used to run small-scale industries and for domestic purposes.

Question 2.
Pick up a stone, a leaf, a paper straw, and a twig. Think of how you can use these as resources. See the example given below and get creative!
